Training Course: PROFINET One-day Training Class- Pittsburgh

Date  May 26, 2010
Description
Learn about the next evolution in automation: PROFIBUS to PROFINET.

What is PROFINET?

PROFINET is the all-encompassing Industrial Ethernet that includes real-time IO, machine-to-machine integration, motion control, safety, vertical integration, and integration of existing fieldbuses including PROFIBUS, Interbus, AS-I, DeviceNet, HART, IO-Link, Foundation Fieldbus, and others.

Who needs to attend this training?

This class is designed to show automation engineers the power and scope of Industrial Ethernet.  It also provides an excellent introduction to Ethernet on the plant floor for IT staff. Individuals who are interested in building a scalable, energy-saving architecture are also encouraged to attend this training class.

Attendees who are considering using other Industrial Ethernet standards to complete an installation need to learn how PROFINET delivers more features and capabilities than other Ethernet standards while using common PROFIBUS concepts to shorten installation time and staff training costs.

What will attendees learn?

After an introduction to the technologies (PROFIBUS and PROFINET), the technical details of PROFINET are presented.  The bulk of the day is spent dealing with “real world” installation and implementation issues. PROFINET is shown to be the solution to those problems as the technology is explained and  demonstrations given.  Application stories show how others have used PROFINET to solve the problem.

Wrap-up and Resources

Areas where PROFINET Technology is encountered include:

Machine building

How do you use PROFINET to add a complete control system to a machine?  This section shows how to use PROFINET IO, wireless connections, interfaces to process instruments, and interfaces to conventional fieldbuses.  It shows how PROFINET is rugged and deterministic.

Machine integration

You buy best-in-class equipment from different suppliers and you cannot afford to pay their up-charges to use your preferred brand of controls.  How do you integrate those individual machines into a working line?  With PROFINET such peer-to-peer integration involves configuration, not programming.  The demo will show how easy it is.

Motion Control

It’s one thing to use Industrial Ethernet for IO and integration, but is it fast enough to use for motion control?  PROFINET is!  See how the same network that handles IO and regular TCP/IP traffic can also control 150 axes of motion control with sub-millisecond update times and less than one microsecond of jitter.

Safety

Since 2002, codes in the US have allowed functional safety to be applied in logic controllers and over a fieldbus.  We will show why PROFIsafe is safe as it runs on PROFIBUS or PROFINET, wired or wireless.

Vertical Integration

Just because Ethernet is used in the office and in the plant does not mean that information can be sent from the plant to the office.  You still need a protocol to define what is transmitted and how.  PROFINET is the only Industrial Ethernet with a specification for this.

Energy Savings

In a time where our society is looking to become more energy conscious, PROFINET delivers an incredibly flexible PROFIenergy profile.  Originally designed at the request of the automotive industry, PROFIenergy is quickly finding acceptance as an essential energy saving tool in many vertical industries.  This class will expose attendees to a world of cost savings via PROFIenergy.

The Network

What are the design considerations for the network and the network hardware?  Are managed Ethernet switches needed or will unmanaged work?  What topologies can be used?  Line topology like a fieldbus?  What are the cable requirements?  How can troubleshooting be done?  All these good questions will be answered as we demonstrate what is needed.

Training timetable:

8:00am Coffee and Snacks
8:30am Class begins
Noon Hosted Lunch
4:30pm Wrap-up
Breaks are provided in mid-morning and mid-afternoon

Door Prizes will be awarded.
All non-member attendees will be awarded a certificate allowing non-members of PTO to attend a PROFINET Certified Network Engineer training class at the PTO members' discounted price (a $500 saving).

Attendees receive a certificate for 5.5 Professional Development Hours (PDH).

This one-day training class will briefly review Ethernet Basics. If you don’t already have an understanding of Industrial Ethernet Basics, please view our archived Ethernet Basics webinars (especially the first two) prior to attending:

  Advanced Network Architecture

  Industrial Wireless Networking

Each attendee will receive a printed book of the presentations and a Resource CD containing the presentations, brochures, technical literature, installation guidelines, and much more.

There are no sales presentations but event sponsors will have tabletop exhibits of PROFINET and PROFIBUS products and services: Anixter, Automation Training, Comtrol, Endress+Hauser, Foxboro, Grid Connect, Hilscher, HMS, Molex, Phoenix Contact, ProSoft, R Stahl, RTA, Siemens, Softing, TURCK, and WAGO.
