DEBUNKING
THE MYTHS

New for 2006!
We take a closer look at some myths surrounding PROFIBUS ... and expose the perpetrators!

RESPONSE: This is an old-fashioned view, and COMPLETELY WRONG! For a start PROFIBUS is an open standard defined by IEC61158 and EN50295. There is one PROFIBUS protocol, though with two implementations - one for discrete automation and one for process. They are tightly integrated and they have to differ because of the physical needs of process automation. No other fieldbus can do both jobs on a single network!

MYTH 2: ... Extensions to the PROFIBUS architecture in recent years are intended to extend the market of PROFIBUS to process automation. (www.pacontrol.com)

RESPONSE: So out of date it's cringe-worthy! There are about 500,000 PROFIBUS PA devices deployed in process automation today and PROFIBUS roughly shares the market with one other technology. Moreover, if the discrete automation devices are added, PROFIBUS is 3-4 times larger in process than anyone else!

PTO TRAINING EVENTS IN 2006
FREE ONE-DAY TRAINING CLASSES
PROFITECH PROGRAM FOR 2006

FREE ONE-DAY TRAINING CLASSES

  • Why should I use a fieldbus?
  • Can someone compare the available fieldbuses for me?
  • How should I choose one over another?
  • I can provide safety functions over a fieldbus? How?
  • Tell me about someone who has used a fieldbus successfully.
  • Where can I get some more technical details?

If you've pondered these questions and more, we can help.

The PTO and the PIC are providing free one-day training classes throughout North America. Current schedule includes 25 cities, but more will be added!

This year's agenda features:

  • Introduction
  • Fieldbus? What, Why, Which?
  • Technical Details of PROFIBUS, PROFIBUS in process, or PROFINET depending on the city
  • Live Demonstrations
  • Application Stories

Breakfast and lunch are provided. Door prizes are awarded. Hosted reception at the end of the day. Product Exhibits are available.

Each attendee receives:

  • Presentations in a hard copy book
  • CD containing the presentations, documentation, brochures, newsletters, and more.
  • Padfolio and pen.

The three distinct series last year covered PROFIBUS, PROFIBUS in the Process Industry and PROFINET. For 2006, these will cover:

  • The economic and technical advantages of using a fieldbus
  • Review of all popular fieldbus choices with special emphasis on
    • PROFIBUS
    • PROFIBUS in the Process Industry
    • PROFINET
  • Technical details of PROFIBUS in the Process Industry, or PROFINET (different cities will have different focuses), including
    • standards
    • protocols
    • wiring
    • troubleshooting
    • diagnostics
    • safety
  • Hardware and software demonstrations using equipment from multiple vendors
  • Detailed, specific application examples

All courses include:

  • Breakfast
  • Lunch
  • Door Prizes
  • Hosted Reception.
  • Vendor displays showing available hardware (but there are no sales presentations!)

Industrial Ethernet growth is predicted to be over 50% per year. Attend our PROFINET training to see how you can benefit from this technology.

In a recent ARC survey on fieldbuses, 85% of the respondents agreed that the total lifecycle cost for a fieldbus installation was less than a conventional installation. And 45% expected a payback in less than one year (27% in less than six months). Attend this training to see how your company can save by using a fieldbus!

PROFITECH PROGRAMME FOR 2006

Two additional classes have been added: PROFIBUS Installer's Class and PROFINET Certified Network Engineering Class.

There are now these four courses available:

PROFIBUS Certified Network Engineering Class: In this hands-on training you will dive into the installation, operation and maintenance of PROFIBUS products and networks. This course is an intensive, four-day training program. Attendees passing the test receive an official PROFIBUS Certified Network Engineer Certificate.

PROFIBUS Installer's Class: This one-day, hands-on course teaches you the installation of PROFIBUS DP networks. Learn how to avoid common networking problems.

PROFINET IO Development Class: Jump on the PROFINET IO bandwagon and start developing an Ethernet interface on your own devices. Our intensive two day PROFINET IO Development Class provides you with the latest information on the various Development Kits including multiple live demonstrations.

PROFINET Certified Network Engineering Class: In this hands-on training you will dive into the installation, operation and maintenance of PROFINET products and networks.

Courses are conducted in Johnson City, TN. The dates for the first PROFIBUS Certified Network Engineering Class are January 30 through February 3. Space is still available. Visit us.profibus.com for the complete schedule and to register.

"I found that the PROFIBUS Engineer Certification has really helped me. I really feel that all the Open Bus technologies should follow suit and come up with their own certification. The information provided in the classroom as well as the Certification Testing has given me the tools to succeed from planning to implementation. Do yourself a favor, attend this Certification Course!" Phillip M. McGough, Emerson Process Management
